I Am Not Your Guru: Why More Information Isn’t Making Us Happier
The Paradox of Knowledge
We’re living in a golden age of information. Every day, we’re bombarded with podcasts, books, articles, social media posts, and videos promising to unlock the secret to happiness.
“Hack your happiness,” they say. “Follow these steps, and you’ll finally feel content.”
It feels good, doesn’t it? A little dopamine hit every time we hear advice that makes us think. This is it. This will change everything.
But here’s the truth: it rarely sticks. Like a sugar rush—quick and satisfying in the moment—it fades just as fast.
Despite having more knowledge about happiness than ever before, people are feeling less happy. Anxiety, depression, and stress are on the rise.
So, what’s going wrong?
The Overload of External Expertise
We’ve become hooked on external advice.
There’s an expert for everything—how to work, parent, relax, even how to be happy. And while expert guidance can help, we’ve swung too far.
Instead of looking inward, we’ve outsourced our happiness to other people’s rules and frameworks, assuming someone else has the magic formula.
But happiness isn’t one-size-fits-all.
What brings one person joy might leave another feeling empty. The more we chase external solutions, the further we drift from understanding what actually fulfils us.
Why Knowledge Alone Isn’t Enough
The problem isn’t a lack of advice—it’s the overload.
Think about how many posts or podcasts have promised to improve your life. Maybe you even tried a few tips, but they didn’t stick. Why?
Because happiness doesn’t come from someone else’s formula.
It comes from knowing what makes you come alive.
When we consume too much information without reflection, we lose touch with our inner compass—the quiet voice that already knows what motivates us.
Reclaiming Your Inner Expert
So, how do we stop this cycle and move toward real happiness?
One of my happiest moments is making a Zencha (my go-to right now), sitting in my study, and writing these Elixirs. It’s my flow state. My JOY.
I write first and foremost for myself. If these emails help you, it’s a beautiful thing. I love hearing you say, I learned a lot. My life is better. I’ve taken action.
But here’s the truth: when you connect with what lights you up, that energy radiates through everything you create.
Happiness doesn’t come from following someone else’s guide—it comes from uncovering the truth of who you already are.
Happiness Comes From Within
Pay attention to what makes you feel truly alive—a quickened heart rate, a gut nudge, a sense of lightness. These are signals from your inner compass.
I feel my best when I create, work out, read, play golf, or am fully present with friends.
And my lowest? When I’m overwhelmed by information, pulled in every direction, and watching my attention slip away.
Find the activities that quiet the noise around you—meditation, breath work, running, yoga—and let your inner voice speak.
Turn down the inputs.
Pause the podcasts, switch off the phone, and step away from the emails (even ones like this). In that stillness, you’ll reconnect with what truly matters.
The greatest irony of our time is that we’ve been taught to search for happiness everywhere except where it truly lives: within ourselves.
Sometimes, the simplest truths are the most profound.
Happiness isn’t something you find—it’s something you uncover.
So trust yourself, listen to your heart, and let joy unfold naturally.
Love & Kia Kaha,
Chris
