Creating Temporal Landmarks

By the second Friday of January—often dubbed ‘Quitters’ Day’—nearly half of all New Year’s resolutions start to unravel.

How are those shiny resolutions holding up for you?

Have you taken action on your goals, or are they starting to slip?

If they are, don’t worry.

In today’s Elixir is here to help you revive them and finish the month strong.

Why Resolutions Lose Their Spark So Quickly!

Ever wonder why New Year’s resolutions feel so powerful at first?

January 1st is a temporal landmark—a clear line in the sand that separates our “old self” from our “new self.”

These landmarks give us the perfect opportunity to become an upgraded version of who we are.

But here’s the catch: by mid-January, many of us have already started slipping back into old habits.

When that happens, we feel like we’ve failed and need to wait until next January to try again. Sound familiar?

In reality, even a week of doing something new—like meditating daily or starting that book—creates progress.

That’s behaviour change, and it’s powerful!

The question is: How do we keep that momentum alive all year long?

Creating More “Temporal Landmark" Moments

The key is to create more of these fresh start moments by harnessing meaningful dates throughout the year.

Here are a few natural temporal landmarks:

  • Your Birthday
  • An Anniversary
  • Christmas
  • Your Child’s Birthday
  • First Day of Each Quarter
  • Moon Cycles
  • First Day of Every Month

Try identifying six dates that matter to you.

For example, every May 5th is a big one for me.

It was the day I graduated.

I reflect on my progress and recalibrate my goals again.

Stepping Back to See the Bigger Picture

Sometimes, we feel like prisoners of our habits.

But when we step back and observe those habits, we reconnect with our higher selves.

Temporal landmarks help us pause, reflect, and break free from unhelpful patterns.

These meaningful dates lift you out of the day-to-day, letting you refocus on your goals and become the best version of yourself.

So, start collecting your temporal landmarks.

Highlight those days as “LANDMARK DAYS” on your calendar.

They’ll give you a renewed sense of purpose and motivate you to become the person you want to be.

  • Funny fact: Since 2015, I’ve been signing my emails with ‘Love & Kia kaha, Chris.’ So many of you reply with ‘Hi Kia,’ which never fails to make me smile—there’s no one here named Kia, and that’s not my name! ‘Kia kaha’ simply means ‘stay strong’ in Māori
  • But I may have to adopt the name simply for this reason :)
