Why I Keep Coming Back to Running

Did you know runners have a secret language?

Not spoken. Not written.

Just felt — between those who lace up and move.

Something magical happens, that only other runners really get to experience.

It's not the runner's high (though, sure — that's nice).

Not even shaving 0.4 seconds off your personal best.

No, it's something that happens during.

A nod from a stranger.

A knowing head nod.

A surprise fist pump.

A cheeky smile.

A wink.

For a split second, as you pass each other, you're in the club.

The unspoken runner's code.

A sweaty little salute that says:

"Yeah, this kinda sucks. But we laced up. We showed up. When staying in bed would've been easier."

And that tiny act? It bonds people.

I was never a runner

In fact, I hated it.

But over the years, I've come to love it.

Because running isn't just physical - it's a masterclass in being present.

Head out thinking about the 10 miles ahead? Your brain quits before your legs do.

Anxiety kicks in at the thought of the daunting task ahead.

But focus on the next step? Then the next?

Something strange happens...

You enter a state athletes call flow — and poets call peace.

When you're in it, nothing else exists.

Running, in that way, is a moving meditation.

The three S's

Years ago, a mentor hit me with a question that's lived rent-free in my head ever since:

"What's the single most powerful habit for personal growth?"

I threw out a few guesses:

Journaling? Reading? Cold showers?

He smiled and said,

"Master the three S's, and everything else follows."

State: how you feel in your body.

Story: what you tell yourself about yourself.

Strategy: what you actually do.

A morning run hits all three.

It changes your state (endorphins, energy, you feel alive).

It rewrites your story ("Look at me, I'm someone who runs before breakfast.").

And it sets your strategy for the day ("If I can do that, I can handle anything.").

The Gift of Moving

Running reminds me of who I want to be.

Not the guy with the best splits or the flashiest gear.

But the guy who chooses to show up, even when it's hard.

The guy who honours his mind by moving his body.

So if you've been feeling flat lately… a bit fuzzy or uninspired or off-course…

Maybe you don't need another productivity hack.

Or another podcast promising to change your life.

Maybe what you need… is to put the phone down, lace up, step outside, and move, just a little.

It doesn't have to be running.

It could be joining a yoga class, walking the long way home.

Or dancing in your kitchen like nobody's watching (because, let's be honest… no one is).

What matters isn't what you do. It's that you do it.

Because movement moves more than just your body.

It shifts your energy. Your focus. Your story.

I forget this mental model all the time.

Some weeks? I fall off completely.

Life gets noisy. The duvet and phone wins.

But every time I come back to it, every time I step out.

I remember: Oh yeah… this is the version of me I like most.

Have a great week,
Kia kaha & love
