The Elixir ← The Elixir

What is the meaning of it all?

I’m on holiday…

I’m writing this to you overlooking a beach in Goa.

In front of me, there are hundreds of human beings living out their day — all at once, all on the same stretch of sand.

Couples walking slowly, holding hands.

Kids sprinting in every direction like they’ve got unlimited battery and zero bills.

Paddle boards gliding. People swimming.

A few people doing yoga by the water.

Sunbathers rotating like supermarket rotisserie chickens.

Locals selling to tourists. Tourists bargaining like it’s an Olympic sport.

And then the big questions start hitting me:

How much life happens right in front of us… that we never actually see?

Not because we don’t care.

But because we’re moving too fast to notice.

The real “holiday benefit” isn’t the sun

Back home, my brain is basically a browser with 47 tabs open:

• reminders

• admin

• stress

• future planning

• random guilt from 2014

But when you take a proper break, something changes.

You slow down.

And when you slow down, you create space.

It’s almost embarrassing how much we miss when we’re stuck in “get through the day.”

Watching all of this naturally stirs the question we pretend we’re too busy for:

What is life actually about?

And maybe the honest answer is:

There isn’t one.

Or at least… not a single one.

I heard something recently that I really liked (it might’ve been on a bumper sticker — I can’t remember the source):

“There is no answer. The real answer is ‘because.’

You get to make up your own answer — and that’s the beauty.

If there were a single answer, we wouldn’t be free. We’d be trapped.”

So many of us live like there’s a “correct” way to do life…

And we’re quietly failing an exam no one told us we signed up for.

But if there’s no single meaning…

Then you’re not behind.

You’re free.

(Which is a nice reframe either way.)

The paradox that calms you down

Another philosophy-of-life idea I love is this:

“All the great questions are paradoxes.”

Like: Do I matter?

On one hand… no.

You’re a tiny dot on a spinning rock in a universe that doesn’t even know your name.

On the other hand… yes.

Because this is your one life.

Your love matters. Your choices matter. Your kindness changes people.

So the paradox is:

“I am nothing, and I am everything.”

You’re not the centre of the universe…

But you are the centre of your own.

And that’s enough.

The most practical part of all this

The world reflects your own feelings back at you. Reality is neutral.

Same day. Same weather. Same circumstances.

One person sees adventure.

Another sees inconvenience.

One person sees a possibility.

Another sees proof that life is against them.

The outside world doesn’t change much.

But the meaning changes completely… depending on the lens you look through.

So maybe it's not where we go, what we do or who we are with.

But the story we tell ourselves.

Have a great week ahead.
Kia kaha & much love,
