The Signal vs The Noise
Last week..
I reviewed everything I did last year.
And honestly?
It was mostly noise.
A full year's worth of to-dos.
So many tasks that could’ve waited.
Or been ignored entirely.
So here is how I am approaching this year
I picked this up from Kevin O’Leary.
Aka Mr Wonderful from the USA equivalent of Dragon's Den
(Side note…He has just taken a lead role in the film: Marty Superme - Brilliant! Saw it twice. Highly recommend.)
Here is the drill…
Every morning, write down just three things.
Not ten. Not a full-page list.
Just three goals.
Three tasks that — if completed — will genuinely move your life, business, or health forward.
These are called the signal.
Everything that stops you from getting those three things done is the noise (Notifications, endless scrolling, random to-dos ect, ect)
How to know what tasks to concentrate on, you ask?
When I’m stuck, I ask myself these questions:
- What task have I been avoiding the longest?
- What — if done today — would make me feel proud?
- What would make tomorrow easier?
- What’s the one thing that makes everything else less necessary?
Circle your top three. Do them.
Keep an eye on your ratio.
If 80% of your day is signal and 20% is noise, you win.
You make progress. You build momentum.
But if it flips? If 80% of your time gets swallowed by noise?
You stay stuck and tread water.
Some noise is unavoidable — that’s life.
But if your days are full of it... It will be another year of drifting and wondering where time went.
Your Life Is Built By What You Focus On
One of my three goals today? Write this Elixr to you.
I had a funeral to attend at 11 am. So the plan was: wake up early, write it first thing, hit send before leaving.
But I didn’t. “The Noise” came rolling in..
I hit the snooze button. Woke up later than I intended.
I scrolled. I answered messages.
I got pulled into the noise and wasn’t focused on the signal.
Writing The Elixir!
Now it’s 5 pm.
And I’m clawing my way back to focus, trying to finish this.
The other two priorities on my list? Forget them! They’ve been pushed to tomorrow.
Stack enough of those lost days on top of each other, and that’s the difference between progress and procrastination.
So...
Start your day with three clear goals. Call them your signal.
Write them down. Protect them with everything you’ve got.
Then — and only then — deal with the noise.
To make a year count?
It isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing more of what matters.
Every day.
Until the results are too loud to ignore.
Have a great week!
Kia kaha & much love,
Chris x
