The Energy Audit: How to Protect Your Creative Fire

Now and again, I fall into the same trap. I treat my energy as if it were unlimited.

Just one more meeting.

Just one more favour.

Just one more “quick” task before bed.

I’d squeeze every ounce out of the day—until there was nothing left for me.

No room to think clearly. No space to feel deeply. Just a tired shell chasing after “enough”.

But energy isn’t endless. It’s a currency. The goal? Protect your energy like it actually matters. Because it does.

Not every task deserves a yes.

Not every fire needs you to put it out.

And not every hour needs to be productive.

Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do… is nothing at all.

Breathe. Pause. Let the moment catch up with you.

Step 1: Track the Charge

Try this for one day: Write down everything you do. Next to each item, mark it as:

( + ) Energising
( – ) Draining
( ∼ ) Neutral

Then just observe. No judgement. Just data.

Maybe a walk lights you up.

Maybe that “quick scroll on the toilet” leaves you foggy.

Maybe writing fills you.

Maybe Zoom calls flatten you

The point isn’t to shame yourself—it’s to notice. To be aware.

Step 2: Protect the Golden Hours

We all have windows in the day when we feel sharper. For me, it’s early morning—no pings, no meetings, just me and the work that matters.

Guard those hours like a dragon guards its treasure.

Don’t schedule meetings in your golden zone or start the day by checking your inbox.

Picture this: You wake with a 10-stamp coffee card for your energy.

Each context-switch, interruption, or half-focus costs a stamp.

Take a call mid-flow? Stamp.

Check notifications during deep work? Stamp.

Jump tabs, emails, apps? Stamp. Stamp. Stamp.

And unlike your local cafe card, a full card means fatigue, frustration, no momentum.

Spend your stamps where they matter. Once it’s full—you’re running on fumes.

Strength + Space = Magic

Fill more of the + (energisers) into your daily structure and let go of – (drains).

So do the audit. Protect your energy.

Don’t do more—just protect what matters.

Have a great week, enjoy the sunny weather and try to get outside when you can :)
