One Simple Trick for Better Days

I love running.

But I’ve recently changed one tiny part of my routine.

And strangely, it has nothing to do with running.

Normally, my morning looks something like this:

Wake up.

Hunt through the wardrobe.

Find one running sock.

Where is the other one?

Nobody knows.

Find my favourite running shirt.

Smell it.

Absolutely not.

Find another shirt that is almost exactly the same.

Put it on.

Immediately wish I was wearing the other one.

By the time I’m actually ready to run, I’ve already made a dozen completely pointless decisions.

And some mornings, I’d spend so long faffing around that the run would get shorter.

Or disappear altogether.

So I started doing something ridiculously simple.

I lay everything out the night before.

Shorts.

Shirt.

Socks.

Cap

When I wake up, there is nothing to decide.

Just get dressed.

And go.

It got me thinking about something bigger.

Imagine every morning you were handed a little card with ten stamps on it.

Every decision you make costs you a stamp.

What should I wear?

Stamp.

What should I eat?

Stamp.

Should I run now or later?

Stamp.

Should I answer this email?

Stamp.

By lunchtime, you could have punched through half your card without making a single decision that meaningfully moves your life forward.

Yet think about your best days at work.

The days when you’re completely in the zone.

You usually have very few inputs.

One clear intention.

A block of time.

And one thing in front of you.

That’s where some of our best work happens.

I think we underestimate how exhausting the tiny decisions are.

Make the unimportant things easier, so you have more of yourself for the important ones.

Have a great week ahead.

Kia kaha and love,

Chris xx
