Actionable Tactics, Routines & Tools to Win the Day (Especially with an ADHD Brain)

Whether you're neurodivergent or just... easily distracted,

Your morning is either a launchpad or quicksand.

So through trial and error.

I've built a system that actually works for my ADHD brain.

Here's what helps me win the day and might help you, too!

(I have added direct links to the specific tools I love and use, where I can - none of these are paid affiliates.)

1. You Wake Up Feeling Like a Sloth Who Pulled an All-Nighter

Most of the time, that is how I feel when I wake up.

If I do not move my body and wake it up.

Nothing happens or gets done.

You scroll. You stare. You fail.

Solution: Move Before You Think

Before you plan anything, change your state.

Move your body. Wake your brain. Give yourself the signal: "Let's go."

Actionable Tools:

  • 20-minute walk, jog, swim — anything. Just move.
  • Free YouTube workouts if you're homebound: Here is one I do often.
  • Wim Hof Breathing App (free, powerful, weirdly fun).
  • Cold shower (Sounds terrible idea, but it always works).
  • Get sunlight ASAP for the first two hours of the day to help with circadian rhythm, improve mood, boost energy, and increase focus.

2. Too Much Noise & Distractions

You sit down to work, but somehow:

You open an email.

Forget why.

Open Instagram.

End up researching Japanese toilets.

Now it's 3 p.m.

Sound familiar?

Solution: Narrow the Focus

ADHD brains don't feel time passing, so you need to make time feel real!

Actionable Tools:

  • Micro-time-blocking: Use a 20-minute visual timer (Pomodoro, sand timer (my fav), loud ticking kitchen clock! Make time as visible as you can!
  • Sticky notes, whiteboards, and post-its get thoughts out of your head and into your space. I am surrounded by motivational quotes on post-it notes! Sounds crazy, but it works!
  • Journal: Get all of your thoughts and to-dos out of your head the night before. Then highlight the three most critical tasks for the day ahead. My favourite brand of journal.
  • Loop one song. Here is my Spotify Playlist. I find playing one song all day helps significantly with my focus.

3. Your Environment Is Everything

Messy desk. Random laundry pile. 15 mugs you don't remember using.

Your space starts yelling at you before you've even had caffeine.

Solution: Build a Focus-Friendly Environment

Your surroundings should support your brain, not shout over it.

Actionable Tools:

  • Tidy up the night before, a clear desk = a clear mind.
  • Ditch your chair: try sitting on a yoga ball or a standing desk instead.
  • Create zones: one spot for deep work, one for reading, one for breathing. Designated zones create queues for great habits.

4. Problem: Your Phone Is a Tiny, Beautiful Thief

You check one thing, and suddenly it's TikTok → WhatsApp → email → BBC News → TikTok again.

Your brain is most vulnerable in the morning. Don't rent it to the algorithm.

Solution: Guard Your Attention Like It's Sacred

You don't have "focus issues." You have "too many distraction portals."

Actionable Tools:

5. No More Random Mornings

The power of rituals and routines creates momentum.

My Current Morning Routine

  • Wake up at 7:30 am
  • Drink Javasu outside even if no sun.
  • Move: Swim, Run, Exercise Class.
  • Breathe: Whim Hoff App.
  • Start the day: I fast till 1 pm and get all critical tasks done before the first meal.

6. Use Caffeine Intentionally

One coffee a day, that's my rule.

But I only use it to move my body, not my mind.

When I pair caffeine with a workout, it’s rocket fuel.

I come back buzzing with ideas, focused, and clear.

But drink it before sitting down to work?

Game over. My brain turns into a jittery stock exchange — thoughts jumping, ideas colliding, zero progress.

I want caffeine to power motion, not chaos. So if I’m not working out first thing, I skip it.

I use caffeine. It doesn’t use me.

I'll be honest with you.

Most weeks? I'm not achieving all these principles.

Some days I get distracted. Other days I wake up on the wrong side of the bed and the whole thing falls apart.

But when I manage to show up for even 60% of these.

I feel it. Those are the good days.

The days I don't? That's okay too. I just try to come back to them gently.

You don't need to be perfect. You just need to keep trying.

Hope this helps and you find value in some of these tools.

Have a great week ahead.
